Treating the First Signs of Aging

Sun Spots

In our younger years we commonly forget the importance of UV protection and the effects that sun damage has on our skin. Products that have hydroquinone or retinol work best to fade superficial spots within four to eight weeks. Both products will help speed up new cell generation to help skin rebound from the damage quicker. In addition to helping sun spots, products with retinol can help reduce appearance of pores and blemishes. It is important to also include a SPF in your daily routine to prevent further damage.

Teeny lines

As skin begins to thin the appearance of fine lines start become more noticeable. Starting to use glycolic acid will rid your skin of dull cells on the skins surface to make fine lines less and less noticeable.

Crow’s feet

It is important to invest in a quality pair of sunglasses to prevent squinting your eyes during times of harsh sun. Including a SPF in your daily routine will also help to prevent damage. But if you are already seeing signs of crow’s feet adding retinol eye cream will help to rejuvenate the wrinkled skin.

As estrogen levels drop skin can start to appear dull due to new cell generation starting to slow down. Exfoliating regularly with glycolic acid will not only make lines less noticeable by will help new cell turnover to reveal youthful and radiant skin. Regular microdermabrasion will also help in maintaining beautiful and fresh looking skin.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling stimulates collagen production as well as strengthen the skin. A wand with fine needles on the head is passed over on the skin and creates “micro-injuries” which stimulates the healing process. During the healing process the body creates new cells as well as increases collagen and elastin production. This prevents premature signs of ageing as well as reverses current signs of aging.  This procedure is virtually painless and has many benefits associated with it.

Reduces fine lines and wrinkles

Collagen and elastin are what keeps skin looking youthful and radiant. Microneedling stimulates the natural production of collage and elastin in the skin to make skin look younger with minimal downtime. Microneedling can help tighten loose skin to make skin more radiant than ever.

Scar reduction

It has been shown that microneedling can improve and repair visible scars such as acne scars by promoting new healthy cell growth and stimulating collagen growth in the skin.

Minimize pores

Although the process of microneedling is putting small “micro-injuries” in the skin, this procedure stimulates the collagen in and around the pores, which will make them more plump and smaller.

To get rid of the dead winter skin it is important to exfoliate followed with moisturizer. If you want quicker results, you can see your aesthetician for a microblading session to completely get rid of all the dead skin and reveal a new smooth layer of skin.

Go Lighter

During the winter it important to keep skin hydrated with thick creams. Going into the spring you no longer are combating the harsh weather, switch out your heavy creams for lighter products.

SPF is a crucial part of you skin care routine regardless of the season. As the snow clouds start to disappear, it is very important use sunscreen throughout the day to prevent sun damage to your skin.

Use eye cream

Springtime means more sun and with more sunlight comes squinting. Even with sunglasses it’s recommended to add an eye cream to your regimen to prevent fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes.

Why You Should Wear Sunscreen Daily

Harmful UV rays

As our ozone is depleting it puts all of us at a higher risk of being affected by harmful UV rays. By applying a SPF daily you are preventing those rays from penetrating your skin and causing damage.

Premature Aging

The number one cause of premature aging is UV ray exposure. We all crave youthful looking skin and even tan skin, too much exposure to the sun can cause your skin to age sooner than normal. Using sunscreen everyday will help you keep your skin looking radiant and healthy by preventing fine lines and wrinkles caused by the sun.

Lower Skin Cancer Risk

By applying sunscreen everyday early on in life you are lowering your chances of getting skin cancer. It is important to use sunscreen even when it’s cloudy or raining since harmful sunrays can penetrate through clouds.

Even Skin Tone

Using sunscreen can help keep your skin tone even as it helps prevent brown spots and discoloration on your skin.

How to Prevent Wrinkles

Stay Hydrated

By staying hydrated daily, you will be able to prevent fine lines due to dehydration. Keeping your body hydrated from the inside will help keep your skin looking radiant and healthy.

Use sunscreen

When you get sunburnt your skin cells are essentially damaged. And continuous damage from UV rays can cause premature aging and even skin cancer. Whenever you are exposed to the sun, it is important to use sunscreen to prevent UV rays from harming your skin.

Use anti-aging products with caution

It can be tempting to use anti-aging products at a young age. But sometimes using anti-aging products can clog your pores since they are meant to really moisturize your skin. Also since anti-aging products increase the metabolism of your skin cells, when your skin is young it already has a fast metabolism, which can actually increase breakouts. It is important to use skin care products tailored to your skin type.

Use eye cream

Your eyes are the first area where you will notice aging. By keeping your eyes hydrated it will help prevent premature fine lines and wrinkles around that area.

Chemical Peels-What you Need to Know

Chemical peels are one way to achieve young and radiant skin. Essentially a peel removes damaged and hyper-pigmented skin and stimulates collagen production to firm skin. Peels vary from superficial to deep depending on the level and quickness of results you are looking to achieve.

What do peels do?

Peels make your skin smoother, assist in fading brown spots and correcting uneven skin tone and reveal a new fresh layer of skin. Those that use chemical peels to improve the appearance of wrinkles should have them done every 6 to 8 weeks.

Depending on the type of peel you get you can have some varying side effects. With superficial peels you will notice some redness and skin sensitivity with less noticeable results. There might also be a short period of time where you will notice your old layer of skin beginning to flake off. With more intense peels (medium and deep peels) you will notice more intense side effects than the superficial peel. This is due to the fact that peels essentially dissolve the top layer of your skin.

What are the benefits?

Peels are very beneficial to improve your skins function as well as your skin care products function on your skin. By removing your dead skin cells you are stimulating cell development and making it so that there are no dead cells for your skin care products to penetrate through to get to the living ones. There are also certain peels that can help unclog your pores to prevent acne and fade the scars caused post-pimples.

Microblading-What You Should Know

Tired of taking time every morning to create your perfect brow? Microblading your eyebrows is a semi-permanent way to keep your eyebrows looking bold and beautiful!

What is it?

It’s a type of semi-permanent make-up that is applied with a tool containing small needles. This hand-held tool puts pigment into the skin. The size of these needles depends on the thickness of hair strokes the client wants. This procedure is similar to permanently tattooed make-up but it doesn’t go as deep into the skin. Based on the clients desires and facial structure, the technician creates eyebrows that match them perfectly.

Does it hurt?

Numbing cream is applied to the area before the microblading begins. Most of what patients feel is discomfort rather than pain. Of course, pain is relative so some might experience more discomfort than others.

How long does it take?

The first session will last about two hours. During this session your brow shape and color will be customized to your preference. Your eyebrows will then be numbed using a topical cream and the procedure will begin. There is no downtime after the procedure. The strong color will start to soften out after the first two week; a touch-up can be done after four weeks. Touch-up’s can be done at any point to ensure that the color stays in your skin. Results last upwards of three years, with recommended touch-ups once every six to twelve months.

How much does it cost?

Cost can vary depending on the skill level of the technician, the first session can be upwards of $900.  It is recommended to go to a skilled professional as you will have to live with the results for a long time.

How Often Should You Get a Facial?

Everyone wants to pamper themselves with a facial, even though you might want to one a day for the rest of your life. Doing facials too often can cause your skin to dry out and become damaged. There are many benefits to getting facials in moderation.

Facials help your skin looking as beautiful as possible by removing dead skin that dulls appearance. Your aesthetician will help you understand what your skin needs to look its best and will help you decide what facial is best for your skin type.

It is recommended that you get a facial once a month. The skin cycle lasts a typical month for new skin cells to surface completely. If once a month is unattainable for you, going at least four times a year can help your skin tremendously.

If there are months that you cannot make it to your local spa, at-home treatments can be effective in moderation. It is important to make sure you are giving your skin time between each treatment so that you are not irritating it. Cleaning your face daily and using exfoliators and moisturizers can help you stretch your time between facials.

It’s always frustrating when you get to the gym and you notice that you forgot to put something in your gym bag. Make sure you always have the following in your bag so that you’ll never ruin a perfect workout.

It’s very important to stay hydrated. Having a water bottle in your gym bag is an easy way to avoid the germs of water fountains and keep water with you as you move around the gym.

After your work out it is important to clean off all the sweat from your face to avoid breakouts.

Effects of Aging on Skin

As we age so does the anatomy of our skin, it is one of the most obvious signs of aging. As we increase in age there is also an increase of wrinkles and sagging skin.

Skin becomes drier

As we age, our skin doesn’t produce as many oils as a result of decreasing hormone production. A good way to combat this is to add a good moisturizer to your daily regimen. It is also wise when showering or bathing to use warm water rather than hot water, which removes more oils from your skin.

Skin Thins

Those that are older sometimes have skin that appears to be translucent. As we get older, skin begins to thin revealing blood vessels that are concealing in younger skin. As your skin thins, it becomes more delicate. This is all due to the fact that as we age the fatty layer of the skin deteriorates. As this fatty layer diminishes it makes your skin more susceptible to breaks and bruising.  Sun exposure is another factor that plays into skin thinning; preliminary measures include adding a SPF to your daily routine to retain more elastin fibers in your skin. This keeps your skin from becoming fragile and losing its elasticity faster.

Skin starts to sag

With age comes sagging skin due to gravity catching up with age as well as thinning skin. As we lose the fatty layer of skin, collagen and elastin, we become more susceptible to sagging skin all over the body. Estrogen is a hormone that helps keep skin tight and as women get older estrogen production decreases. It is important to care for your skin early on in life in order to slow skin sagging. You can also see an injectables specialist who can inject filler into your skin to round out your features. By starting these treatments early you can prevent certain parts of you skin from sagging. With a few weeks of recovery time, having a facelift is another way to tighten your skin.

Age spots form

Later in life you’ll notice patches of pigments in your skin, known as age spots. These age spots appear on the parts of your skin that get the most sunlight, the UV light from the sun increases the production of melanin. Avoiding tanning beds and increased sun light exposure will help protect your skin from the development of age spots.

Wrinkles develop

The most common sign of aging are wrinkles. Even starting at the mid-20’s you can begin to see creases that are caused by your daily muscle and skin movement. As we age, more and more winkles appear due to exposure to the sun, dehydration and the thinning of skin.  It is important to start caring for skin at a young age to prevent early signs of aging. Steps include using a good sunscreen, moisturizers and keeping your body hydrated. Botox and fillers can also be used to reduce wrinkles.

Laser Hair Removal-What You Need to Know

We all want a permanent solution to our unwanted hairs, laser hair removal is a treatment for those who want to reduce or remove unwanted facial or body hair.

Tanning and Laser Hair Removal

Unfortunately, laser hair removal works best on light skin, so it is best to stay out of the sun for at least four weeks before your appointment. This also means avoiding spray tans of tanning lotion. It is recommended to start treatment during fall or winter that way your skin will be stubble-free and ready to show off in the summer.

Shave one to two days before your appointment, lasers work to target the pigment of your hair follicles. This means that there needs to be a follicle present in order for the treatment to work, it’s best to avoid waxing before so that you can get the most out of your money

Getting Silky Smooth

It can take up to six sessions of treatment to see your desired results. Depending on the area you are having treated, these sessions can last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. To get the best results these sessions should take place four to six weeks apart from each other to follow along with your hair growth cycle. It is important to be patient during laser hair removal, those with light colored hair or even dark colored skin can make hair removal tricky but not impossible. Most people don’t notice a difference until three months into their treatment.

The Treatment Itself

Laser hair removal can be painful depending on your pain tolerance, but pain is beauty right? After your treatment your skin will be very sensitive to it is important to use a good sunscreen. Things that should be avoided post-treatments include perfumes, deodorant and hot showers or saunas for the next few days. Its also important to not plucking and waxing while you’re receiving treatment, you want your hair follicles to fall out on their own.

Botox Vs. Fillers

Botox and fillers often get confused with one another; here is everything to know about the two so that you can better understand what is right for you.

Botox is short for Botulinum toxin and is a treatment that is injected into facial muscles to temporarily improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. It can even be used to treat excessive sweating. Botox is most commonly used to treat lines that result from facial expressions such as; frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, etc. The effects of Botox last for 3 to 6 months.

Fillers are injected directly into the skin to “plump” that specific area. This treatment helps to regain a youthful appearance by smoothing ones skin. Fillers can be used to reduce laugh lines, enhance lips, even out acne scars, etc. They are also used to add structure or volume to a patients face in their desired area. Fillers can last from six months to five years depending on the type of filler used.

Home Remedies for Spot Treatment

Pesky pimples are not fun to deal with and neither are expensive acnes treatments. Here are some inexpensive and easy at home remedies you can do to treat your pimples from home.

Green Tea

You can either place a soaked bag of green tea over the spot for 15 minutes or use a cooled cup of tea as a face wash, this will help inflammation and bacterial growth in acne-prone skin.

Dissolve four pills in two tablespoons of water to make a paste and put the paste on your pimple to reduce its inflammation and dry it up. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse off with warm water.

Apple cider vinegar

Mix one part water with three parts apple cider vinegar and apply to the pimple with a cotton ball. This can be done multiple times a day if necessary, be sure to use a moisturizer after to avoid dry skin.

Using pure aloe, use a fingertip or cotton swab to apply directly to the problem area. This reduces the redness and swelling of the pimple, similar to its effects on sunburns.

Using a pure white toothpaste can speed up the healing process of acne. Just a dab of toothpaste on your pimple for a few hours or overnight will help dry it out. Be sure to not make this a go-to treatment as toothpaste is intended for your teeth not your skin.

Preventing Ingrown Hairs

An ingrown hair is a hair that curls and begins to grow back into your skin. Ingrown hair can be both irritating to the skin and frustrating to deal with. Here are a few tips to prevent ingrown hairs:

Try a different method

Everyone’s skin is different. Laser hair removal and epilators are the two techniques that take hair out from the root and are least likely to cause ingrown hairs. If you love shaving, try adding a moisturizing shaving cream and shaving in the direction of your hair growth so that you’re not pushing your hair in the wrong direction causing ingrown hairs.

Skin care

Proper cleaning helps clean your hair follicles a lot so that they are able to grow and are less likely to get caught and grow under your skin. Adding exfoliation to your routine ensures that there are no dead skin cells that your hair can get trapped under.

When you wear tight clothes, it makes it difficult for your hair to grown properly and can force the hair follicles to grown back into your skin. By avoiding tight clothing, you can save yourself from getting ingrown hairs.

Be gentle

Up to 24 hours after you shave or wax, your skin will be very sensitive. The pores of your skin will be open so it is important to not irritate the area in which you shaved. Avoid any skin products with alcohol that will tighten and dry your skin out, increasing your chance of ingrown hairs.

What is Derma-planing?

Derma-planing is a form of exfoliation that uses a scalpel to scrape off the top layer of dead skin and fine hairs to expose smooth and brighter looking skin. By removing the layer of dead skin and peach fuzz, you’re removing what keeps oil on your skin and what gives your skin the dull appearance. Derma-planing can be done on various skin types, the only skin type it cannot be done on is those currently experiencing a breakout.

The procedure uses an inch long blade and is completely painless. After prepping and drying the skin your aesthetician will take the blade and scrape your skin in small and quick swipes to exfoliate your skin. The whole process takes about 30 minutes with results that last about 20 days and can be done every three to four weeks. You can also having derma-planing done with other procedures such as chemical peels and laser treatments to maximize the exfoliating benefits.

After derma-planing, your cleansers will be able to work deeper in your skin and helps your makeup go on easier. The benefits of investing in derma-planing include reduced signs of aging, even skin tone and clearer skin. If you want glowing and refreshed skin, pair derma-planing with your next facial or peel treatment at Advanced Aesthetics.

What is an Injectables Specialist?

An Injectables Specialist, also known as an aesthetic nurse, work to improve and enhance a patient's appearance. In the medical spa world, there are RNs that have specialized training in cosmetics procedures. They work to smooth wrinkles and fine lines, shape lips, improving imperfections and more. These nurses perform non-surgical aesthetics enhancement procedures, and are becoming more and more common in the medical spa industry. The procedures that are preformed by an injectables specialist do not involve anesthesia.

In order to become an injectables specialist you do not need to be an aesthetician first, but training is required within the area of skin care and cosmetic procedures on top of being a registered nurse. One of the primary goals of an Injectables Specialist is to improve the patient's perception of themselves and improve psychological health by modifying their body image.

Injectables specialists are available to answer any questions patients might have about procedures available.
