Need advice from your Fort Collins, CO dermatologist on how to handle sun spots? Look no further than our advice corner! Tired of embarrassing sun spots and feeling like you have to hide them with long clothes or makeup? Did you know that sunspots are also known as hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by either hormonal reasons (see melasma blog post from earlier this month) or by sun exposure. Hyperpigmentation is characterized by a darkening of an area of skin. This occurs as a result of the overproduction of the skin pigment melanin. It is common and usually not harmful, but can be embarrassing for those that experience hyperpigmentation. Anyone can be affected, but those of darker skin typically experience hyperpigmentation more often. It can affect any part of the body, including face, hands, and neck.

Hyperpigmentation can show up from sun exposure as either letingo/lentigenes, or solar lentigenes. Lentigo means freckles, and lentigenes are multiple freckles. Solar lentigenes are known as sun spots, age spots, or liver spots, and they are freckles caused by sun exposure.

Your risk for hyperpigmentation can be avoided by wearing a sunscreen of at least SPF15 daily and avoiding sun exposure. Regular exfoliation is also helpful to remove dead surface skin cells. With dry, sensitive or mature skin, exfoliating 1-2 times a week is a healthy amount. With combination or oily skin, exfoliating 2-3 times a week is recommended. Do not exfoliate acne erupted skin as they can make the condition worse.

Hyperpigmentation can be treated with a customized skin care regimen, which we can help you prepare here at Advanced Aesthetics of Northern Colorado! We can work with most budgets to help you plan a personalized treatment plan and we carry the line of Lira skincare products which are great for hyperpigmentation!

Laser Genesis from a Patient’s Perspective; Medi Spa Fort Collins

The following is a retelling from one of our satisfied patients at Advanced Aesthetics of Northern Colorado, who received a Laser Genesis facial recently.

"I had never been to a day spa nor a medical spa before, but I decided to schedule a Laser Genesis facial. This was my first ever facial (other than the cheap face masks you can get at the grocery store and apply at home). Fortunately, having had a great experience with LASIC laser vision correction, I was not afraid of the laser. I had read a little bit about what Laser Genesis feels like, and I knew that it would not be a painful procedure.

I arrived at the spa the morning of my appointment, and was greeted by Christina, who helped me feel right at home. After completing some paperwork, including medical releases and information on my medical background and skin health, we discussed the procedure in depth. Christina answered all of my questions and made me feel comfortable immediately. After discussing everything fully, it was time to start the procedure!

I lay down on the table and Christina washed my face with a gentle cleanser, to remove any dirt and debris. After drying my face, she then started the laser. She told me that we would do the facial in four sections- each cheek, the forehead, and then finally the area around the mouth. Just like I had heard, the laser felt like warm rain on my cheek. The warmth increased at the procedure continued. For my skin type, I was receiving 100 pulses of the laser per section of face. The laser pulses very rapidly and you just hear light beeps for each pulse, too fast to count. While the cheek and forehead sections were being done, I was able to continue chatting with Christina, which made me feel very comfortable. I would also say that the laser felt like laying out under the warm sun. It was just a very warm feeling- not hot, and not burning, but like the sun was shining down on your face. During the entire procedure, there were eye protection goggles over both eyes. When it was time to do the mouth region, she warned me that the laser could crack my teeth if it came in contact with them, so to be sure and not talk or open my mouth during that part of the process. After all four sections were done, she applied a lovely moisturizing SPF cream from Lira to my skin and said I was good to go about my day as usual!

Thank you for helping my skin feel and look clearer and smoother, Christina! You’re the best!"

Have You Heard of the Margarita Sunburn? Fort Collins Med Spa

Pretty much everyone likes margaritas, especially in the summer! But there’s a dangerous side of margaritas that you should be aware of before the summer passes!

The margarita sunburn is a term for phytophotodermatitis, which occurs when oil or dander from some plants and citrus fruits (such as lime, grapefruit, and Valencia oranges) get on your skin and then is exposed to UV light. This combo causes a chemical burn about a day or two afterwards, which can become severe! It can result in burning, stinging, or blisters, and hyperpigmentation, which can take months to fade. Phytophotodermatitis is a chemical reaction which makes skin hypersensitive to ultraviolet light. It is often mistaken for hereditary conditions such as atopic dermatitis or chemical burns, but is actually caused by contact with the photosensitizing compounds naturally found in certain plants such as citrus fruits. This skin condition is a cutaneous phototoxic inflammatory eruption resulting from contact with light-sensitizing botanical substances and ultraviolet light such as from sun exposure. The appearance often resembles a bruise and may be accompanied by blisters or burning. The reaction typically begins within 24 hours of exposure and peaks at 48-72 hours after exposure.

People with all different skin types are vulnerable to margarita sunburn and can be affected. The severity of the burn depends on the amount of juice sap that was on the skin and the amount of UV exposure. Likewise, people of any age can be affected. The appearance, resembling a bruise, in the shape of handprints or fingerprints, can be mistaken for child abuse.

The best way to reduce the risk of margarita sunburn is to wash the skin with a gentle soap. Otherwise, avoid significant UV exposure and sweating.

For safety this summer, wear lots of sunscreen and definitely do not touch limes and sit in the sun! Talk to us about the excellent SPF moisturizers and other SPF products from Lira that we carry!

Chemical Peels; Fort Collins Facials

10042809_xl.jpg

Do you suffer from wrinkles, fine lines, mild scars, acne, age spots, freckles, or dark patches on your face? If so, you may be a candidate for a chemical peel to improve your skin’s appearance. No need to hide behind makeup! Let the true you shine!

Chemical peels apply a chemical solution to the skin which gets rid of dead skin cells on the surface, and after about 10 days it begins to flake off. The new skin is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, or hands to improve the look and feel of the skin.

We will work with you to determine the depth of the peel, depending on the condition of your skin and your goals for treatment. First, we will clean your skin thoroughly. Then, we will apply one or more chemical solutions to the area of treatment- either glycolic acid, thrichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or a plant enzyme. This will create a controlled area of new skin generation.

During the treatment, most people feel five to ten minutes of a burning sensation, followed by a stinging sensation. Putting cool compresses on the skin may help with the stinging. If a deeper peel is performed, pain medication may be needed during or after the procedure. We will never perform a deep peel without a thorough consultation and skin analysis.

Depending on the type of peel, a reaction much like sunburn occurs after the procedure. There is usually peeling with redness, followed by scaling, which typically ends within three to seven days. Peels may be repeated within several weeks to months, depending on the depth of the peel and the results desired. Often times to achieve the optimum result a series of peels is best, over the course of 3-4 months.
