Need advice from your Fort Collins, CO dermatologist on how to handle sun spots? Look no further than our advice corner! Tired of embarrassing sun spots and feeling like you have to hide them with long clothes or makeup? Did you know that sunspots are also known as hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by either hormonal reasons (see melasma blog post from earlier this month) or by sun exposure. Hyperpigmentation is characterized by a darkening of an area of skin. This occurs as a result of the overproduction of the skin pigment melanin. It is common and usually not harmful, but can be embarrassing for those that experience hyperpigmentation. Anyone can be affected, but those of darker skin typically experience hyperpigmentation more often. It can affect any part of the body, including face, hands, and neck.

Hyperpigmentation can show up from sun exposure as either letingo/lentigenes, or solar lentigenes. Lentigo means freckles, and lentigenes are multiple freckles. Solar lentigenes are known as sun spots, age spots, or liver spots, and they are freckles caused by sun exposure.

Your risk for hyperpigmentation can be avoided by wearing a sunscreen of at least SPF15 daily and avoiding sun exposure. Regular exfoliation is also helpful to remove dead surface skin cells. With dry, sensitive or mature skin, exfoliating 1-2 times a week is a healthy amount. With combination or oily skin, exfoliating 2-3 times a week is recommended. Do not exfoliate acne erupted skin as they can make the condition worse.
