Juvederm is similar to Botox in that it is a facial injectable which helps temporarily minimize wrinkles. We are going to answer some of the frequently asked questions relating to Juvederm, so you can decide if it is something you might be interested in.

What is Juvederm? It is a gel dermal filler which helps to instantly restore the volume to your skin and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds. It temporarily adds volume to facial tissue and restores a smoother facial appearance.

How is it used? It is injected into the facial tissue with a fine needle.

How does it work? There are numerous hyaluronic acid fillers, but Juvederm is unique because it is manufactured with HYLACROSS technology which gives it a special smooth gel structure that lasts over time. It is approved by the FDA to last up to one year with only one treatment.

What is Hyaluronic Acid? It is a naturally occurring substance found in all mammals that helps hydrate and add volume to your skin. It can be used for cosmetic purposes but also for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement as well as for eye surgeries and wound repair. It occurs in abundance in young healthy skin. With age and other factors such as sunlight, the amount of Hyaluronic Acid are reduced, which causes your skin to lose structure and volume creating wrinkles and folds. Juvederm is a safe and effective way to replace the hyaluronic acid your skin has lost, bringing back facial volume!

What will treatment with Juvederm accomplish? It will help smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. For most patients, one treatment will accomplish optimal wrinkle smoothing for up to one year. Most patients will see improvement immediately after treatment. We will work with you on an individual basis to achieve the most natural looking results.

What are possible side effects? Most side effects are mild or moderate, with short lasting duration. Common side effects include temporary injection site reactions like redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. There is the possible risk of infection, like with all skin injection procedures.

What should I do prior to treatment? Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen, because they can both increase bleeding or bruising at the injection site.

What do I need to do after treatment? Return to normal activities other than vigorous exercise (which can resume the following day).

Can people with different skin tones receive Juvederm injections? Yes! Juvederm is the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has been proven safe and effective for people of color. There is no increased risk of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring in patients of color.
