Botox: What You Need to Know

Botox is the most popular cosmetic treatment with more than 6 million treatments administered each year.

  • What is it and how does it work?

Botox is Botulinum toxin, a natural purified protein that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to control muscles spams and severe underarm sweating. Botox essentially blocks the signals your nerves send that tell your muscles to contract, which relaxes and softens the wrinkles.

Botox is the well-known brand name of the product and has been developed and used for decades. It is also the safest product and is certified in both the medical and cosmetic field.

  • What does this treatment involve?

Slight and temporary bruising and swelling may occur directly after the treatment. Headaches can occur but only last one to two days. There are no long-term side effects of having Botox injections.

  • Who is this treatment for?

Botox can serve a variety of purposes but is mainly used cosmetically for the reduction of fine lines and skin rejuvenation. The treatment is injected into the muscles and used to improve the look of wrinkles in the skin for a period of time.

  • What is the goal of this treatment?

The goal of Botox is to soften wrinkles and can last between four to six months at a time. As the muscle action slowly returns the lines and wrinkles will reappear, they will need to be retreated to maintain the effect. As treatments progress the lines and wrinkles will often appear less severe because the muscles are learning to relax.

Chemical Peels; Fort Collins Facials

Do you suffer from wrinkles, fine lines, mild scars, acne, age spots, freckles, or dark patches on your face? If so, you may be a candidate for a chemical peel to improve your skin’s appearance. No need to hide behind makeup! Let the true you shine!

Chemical peels apply a chemical solution to the skin which gets rid of dead skin cells on the surface, and after about 10 days it begins to flake off. The new skin is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, or hands to improve the look and feel of the skin.

We will work with you to determine the depth of the peel, depending on the condition of your skin and your goals for treatment. First, we will clean your skin thoroughly. Then, we will apply one or more chemical solutions to the area of treatment- either glycolic acid, thrichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or a plant enzyme. This will create a controlled area of new skin generation.

During the treatment, most people feel five to ten minutes of a burning sensation, followed by a stinging sensation. Putting cool compresses on the skin may help with the stinging. If a deeper peel is performed, pain medication may be needed during or after the procedure. We will never perform a deep peel without a thorough consultation and skin analysis.

Depending on the type of peel, a reaction much like sunburn occurs after the procedure. There is usually peeling with redness, followed by scaling, which typically ends within three to seven days. Peels may be repeated within several weeks to months, depending on the depth of the peel and the results desired. Often times to achieve the optimum result a series of peels is best, over the course of 3-4 months.
