Treating the First Signs of Aging

Sun Spots

In our younger years we commonly forget the importance of UV protection and the effects that sun damage has on our skin. Products that have hydroquinone or retinol work best to fade superficial spots within four to eight weeks. Both products will help speed up new cell generation to help skin rebound from the damage quicker. In addition to helping sun spots, products with retinol can help reduce appearance of pores and blemishes. It is important to also include a SPF in your daily routine to prevent further damage.

Teeny lines

As skin begins to thin the appearance of fine lines start become more noticeable. Starting to use glycolic acid will rid your skin of dull cells on the skins surface to make fine lines less and less noticeable.

Crow’s feet

It is important to invest in a quality pair of sunglasses to prevent squinting your eyes during times of harsh sun. Including a SPF in your daily routine will also help to prevent damage. But if you are already seeing signs of crow’s feet adding retinol eye cream will help to rejuvenate the wrinkled skin.

As estrogen levels drop skin can start to appear dull due to new cell generation starting to slow down. Exfoliating regularly with glycolic acid will not only make lines less noticeable by will help new cell turnover to reveal youthful and radiant skin. Regular microdermabrasion will also help in maintaining beautiful and fresh looking skin.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling stimulates collagen production as well as strengthen the skin. A wand with fine needles on the head is passed over on the skin and creates “micro-injuries” which stimulates the healing process. During the healing process the body creates new cells as well as increases collagen and elastin production. This prevents premature signs of ageing as well as reverses current signs of aging.  This procedure is virtually painless and has many benefits associated with it.

Reduces fine lines and wrinkles

Collagen and elastin are what keeps skin looking youthful and radiant. Microneedling stimulates the natural production of collage and elastin in the skin to make skin look younger with minimal downtime. Microneedling can help tighten loose skin to make skin more radiant than ever.

Scar reduction

It has been shown that microneedling can improve and repair visible scars such as acne scars by promoting new healthy cell growth and stimulating collagen growth in the skin.

Minimize pores

Although the process of microneedling is putting small “micro-injuries” in the skin, this procedure stimulates the collagen in and around the pores, which will make them more plump and smaller.

Why You Should Add a Serum to Your Skin Care Routine

Adding a serum to your daily skin care routine can make a huge difference in the way that your skin looks and feels. The benefits of adding a serum include; even skin tone, reduced fine lines and wrinkles as well as a brighter complexion.

No fillers

Those that have sensitive/acne-prone skin can especially benefit from adding a serum to their skin care routine. Serums contain the highest concentration of active ingredients possible without a prescription, being around 70% active ingredients. Serums are designed to help the minerals, peptides and stem cells pass through the outer layer of skin. With minimal filler there is nothing to get in the way of your skin receiving the nutrients.

Hydrates skin

Serums active ingredients include many nourishing elements and vitamins. Compared to moisturizers, serums molecules are smaller which allows it to hydrate even the deep layers of your skin. Hydrated skin prevents aging and breakouts, which can be avoided by adding a serum to your skin care routine.

 Every serum is different

Using the correct serum for your skin type can be very effective when used correctly. There a serums for normal, sensitive, dull skin and so on. Transitioning Your Winter Skin Care Routine To Spring

The harsh winter weather cans build-up on your skin leaving dead skin cells and environmental toxin on the skin. To get rid of the dead winter skin it is important to exfoliate followed with moisturizer. If you want quicker results, you can see your aesthetician for a microblading session to completely get rid of all the dead skin and reveal a new smooth layer of skin.

Go Lighter

During the winter it important to keep skin hydrated with thick creams. Going into the spring you no longer are combating the harsh weather, switch out your heavy creams for lighter products.

SPF is a crucial part of you skin care routine regardless of the season. As the snow clouds start to disappear, it is very important use sunscreen throughout the day to prevent sun damage to your skin.

Use eye cream

Springtime means more sun and with more sunlight comes squinting. Even with sunglasses it’s recommended to add an eye cream to your regimen to prevent fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes.

Why You Should Wear Sunscreen Daily

Harmful UV rays

As our ozone is depleting it puts all of us at a higher risk of being affected by harmful UV rays. By applying a SPF daily you are preventing those rays from penetrating your skin and causing damage.

Premature Aging

The number one cause of premature aging is UV ray exposure. We all crave youthful looking skin and even tan skin, too much exposure to the sun can cause your skin to age sooner than normal. Using sunscreen everyday will help you keep your skin looking radiant and healthy by preventing fine lines and wrinkles caused by the sun.

Lower Skin Cancer Risk

By applying sunscreen everyday early on in life you are lowering your chances of getting skin cancer. It is important to use sunscreen even when it’s cloudy or raining since harmful sunrays can penetrate through clouds.

Even Skin Tone

Using sunscreen can help keep your skin tone even as it helps prevent brown spots and discoloration on your skin.

Benefits of Routine Facials

A routine skin care regimen is so important. There is only so much one can do a home, seeing a professional regularly for facials can help you reach you skin goals faster. Below are just a few benefits from getting facials regularly:

Reduce scarring

There are specific treatments like chemical peels that aim to even out skin tone and make acne scars less notice able. The more and more you get peels the less noticeable acnes past is.

Reduce fine lines and wrinkles

During treatments like dermaplanning the top layer of skin is removed to reveal fresh and evenly textured skin, which makes fine lines and wrinkles less noticeable. Regular dermaplanning helps up your skins collagen levels to prevent wrinkles down the line.

Radiant skin

When you get a facial and remove all the dead skin on your face all that is left is fresh and smooth skin that makes you appear revitalized.

You’ll feel great

Few things in life are as great as getting a facial. Not only are you getting a relaxing treatment but you are also leaving with healthier skin to show off to the world.

How to Prevent Wrinkles

Stay Hydrated

By staying hydrated daily, you will be able to prevent fine lines due to dehydration. Keeping your body hydrated from the inside will help keep your skin looking radiant and healthy.

Use sunscreen

When you get sunburnt your skin cells are essentially damaged. And continuous damage from UV rays can cause premature aging and even skin cancer. Whenever you are exposed to the sun, it is important to use sunscreen to prevent UV rays from harming your skin.

Use anti-aging products with caution

It can be tempting to use anti-aging products at a young age. But sometimes using anti-aging products can clog your pores since they are meant to really moisturize your skin. Also since anti-aging products increase the metabolism of your skin cells, when your skin is young it already has a fast metabolism, which can actually increase breakouts. It is important to use skin care products tailored to your skin type.

Use eye cream

Your eyes are the first area where you will notice aging. By keeping your eyes hydrated it will help prevent premature fine lines and wrinkles around that area.

Chemical Peels-What you Need to Know

Chemical peels are one way to achieve young and radiant skin. Essentially a peel removes damaged and hyper-pigmented skin and stimulates collagen production to firm skin. Peels vary from superficial to deep depending on the level and quickness of results you are looking to achieve.

What do peels do?

Peels make your skin smoother, assist in fading brown spots and correcting uneven skin tone and reveal a new fresh layer of skin. Those that use chemical peels to improve the appearance of wrinkles should have them done every 6 to 8 weeks.

Depending on the type of peel you get you can have some varying side effects. With superficial peels you will notice some redness and skin sensitivity with less noticeable results. There might also be a short period of time where you will notice your old layer of skin beginning to flake off. With more intense peels (medium and deep peels) you will notice more intense side effects than the superficial peel. This is due to the fact that peels essentially dissolve the top layer of your skin.

What are the benefits?

Peels are very beneficial to improve your skins function as well as your skin care products function on your skin. By removing your dead skin cells you are stimulating cell development and making it so that there are no dead cells for your skin care products to penetrate through to get to the living ones. There are also certain peels that can help unclog your pores to prevent acne and fade the scars caused post-pimples.

Laser Hair Removal-What You Need to Know

We all want a permanent solution to our unwanted hairs, laser hair removal is a treatment for those who want to reduce or remove unwanted facial or body hair.

Tanning and Laser Hair Removal

Unfortunately, laser hair removal works best on light skin, so it is best to stay out of the sun for at least four weeks before your appointment. This also means avoiding spray tans of tanning lotion. It is recommended to start treatment during fall or winter that way your skin will be stubble-free and ready to show off in the summer.

Shave one to two days before your appointment, lasers work to target the pigment of your hair follicles. This means that there needs to be a follicle present in order for the treatment to work, it’s best to avoid waxing before so that you can get the most out of your money

Getting Silky Smooth

It can take up to six sessions of treatment to see your desired results. Depending on the area you are having treated, these sessions can last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. To get the best results these sessions should take place four to six weeks apart from each other to follow along with your hair growth cycle. It is important to be patient during laser hair removal, those with light colored hair or even dark colored skin can make hair removal tricky but not impossible. Most people don’t notice a difference until three months into their treatment.

The Treatment Itself

Laser hair removal can be painful depending on your pain tolerance, but pain is beauty right? After your treatment your skin will be very sensitive to it is important to use a good sunscreen. Things that should be avoided post-treatments include perfumes, deodorant and hot showers or saunas for the next few days. Its also important to not plucking and waxing while you’re receiving treatment, you want your hair follicles to fall out on their own.

Botox Vs. Fillers

Botox and fillers often get confused with one another; here is everything to know about the two so that you can better understand what is right for you.

Botox is short for Botulinum toxin and is a treatment that is injected into facial muscles to temporarily improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. It can even be used to treat excessive sweating. Botox is most commonly used to treat lines that result from facial expressions such as; frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, etc. The effects of Botox last for 3 to 6 months.

Fillers are injected directly into the skin to “plump” that specific area. This treatment helps to regain a youthful appearance by smoothing ones skin. Fillers can be used to reduce laugh lines, enhance lips, even out acne scars, etc. They are also used to add structure or volume to a patients face in their desired area. Fillers can last from six months to five years depending on the type of filler used.

If you have further questions about either treatment book a free injectables consultation with us today!

Waxing: Before and After Tip

Before Waxing

  • Exfoliate

1 to 2 days before your appointment exfoliate your body to make your skin both soft and to avoid in-grown hairs.

  • Trim

The longer the hair the more painful it is to wax. Trim your hair so that it's between 1.5 and .5 cm, to save yourself from unnecessary pain.

  • Shower

Before you go in for your appointment shower, this opens up your pores. This helps your hairs come out a lot less painfully.

  • Pain Relief

If you know you have a very low pain tolerance, take an OTC painkiller at least 30-40 minutes before your appointment.

  • Wear Loose Clothing

By wearing loose clothes to your appointment you will help avoid friction to the area afterwards.

After Waxing

What to avoid for the next few days:

  • Tight clothing
  • Friction and excessive perspiration
  • Hot bath/shower and saunas
  • Spray tans/body lotion/perfume/deodorant on waxed area
  • Sunbathing

Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin

Dry and dehydrated skin are two very different skin conditions, despite the fact that they might feel similar. Both skin conditions can make skin feel flaky, itchy, sensitive and or dull. When it comes down to it, dry skin lacks oil where as dehydrated skin lacks water.

Dry skin

When your skin doesn’t produce enough oil, your skin becomes dry. Dry skin is a type of skin, which can be genetically determined. For those who have dry skin the best thing to do is add oil.  Creamy, gentle and oil based cleansers are all good options to add more moisture to the skin. Even adding a daily moisturizer to your daily facial routine is a great way for all skin types to keep skin from appearing dry.

Dehydrated skin

Skin that is dehydrated is very common; most people have some degree of dehydration. Where dry skin is a type, dehydration is a condition, which means that you can take steps to improve your skins level of dehydration. Dehydration is caused by ones lifestyle, from ones living environment to their diet. Dehydration can affect all skin types, even oily skin. A good way to combat oily skin is to drink plenty of water and ensure that your living conditions are not too dry by adding a humidifier.

Why a Daily Skin Regimen is Important

As the largest organ by cleaning, hydrating and protecting your skin from the elements twice a day, it can make a huge difference in the health of your skin. Below are several reason why a skin care routine is important.

  • All skin types are different

Some people’s skin doesn’t require as much as others and vice versa. Your skin might need a little more care and that is why a daily routine is so important, to understand what your skin needs from you to look amazing! Consult a specialist to better understand what your skin needs to look its best.

  • Beautiful skin takes time

Every choice you make today will impact your skin years from now. The sooner you start showing your skin some TLC will help you keep wonderful looking skin down the road.

  • Prevention is easier than fixing

Your skill will stay in good condition if you start caring for it early. By taking action now to prevent skin problems, it is actually a lot easier than trying to fix these issues in the future.

  • It can save you money in the long run

By taking action now to prevent issues in the future, you are also saving money by taking care of skin issues that could arise in the future.

  • When you look good you feel good

Clear and healthy skin keeps you looking your best and boosts your confidence. You wear your skin everyday so why not make it looks as great as possible.

Botox: What You Need to Know

Botox is the most popular cosmetic treatment with more than 6 million treatments administered each year.

  • What is it and how does it work?

Botox is Botulinum toxin, a natural purified protein that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to control muscles spams and severe underarm sweating. Botox essentially blocks the signals your nerves send that tell your muscles to contract, which relaxes and softens the wrinkles.

Botox is the well-known brand name of the product and has been developed and used for decades. It is also the safest product and is certified in both the medical and cosmetic field.

  • What does this treatment involve?

Slight and temporary bruising and swelling may occur directly after the treatment. Headaches can occur but only last one to two days. There are no long-term side effects of having Botox injections.

  • Who is this treatment for?

Botox can serve a variety of purposes but is mainly used cosmetically for the reduction of fine lines and skin rejuvenation. The treatment is injected into the muscles and used to improve the look of wrinkles in the skin for a period of time.

  • What is the goal of this treatment?

The goal of Botox is to soften wrinkles and can last between four to six months at a time. As the muscle action slowly returns the lines and wrinkles will reappear, they will need to be retreated to maintain the effect. As treatments progress the lines and wrinkles will often appear less severe because the muscles are learning to relax.

What’s Your Skin Type? From Your Fort Collins Med Spa

Here at Advanced Aesthetics of Northern Colorado, we know how important it is to determine your skin type! After all, this affects everything from what kind of facial would be best for you to what cleansing and moisturizing products you should use! You should also know that your skin type can change over time! Younger people are more likely to have  a normal skin type. Factors that affect skin type are how much water is in your skin, how oily it is, and how sensitive it is.

Normal skin is not too dry and not too oily. It has no or few imperfections, barely visible pores, no severe sensitivity, and a radiant complexion.

Combination skin is when your skin is dry or normal in some areas, and oily in others (like the T-zone of the nose, forehead, and chin). This is a common skin type, which may need slightly different care in different areas. With combination skin, pores may look larger than normal, have blackheads, and shiny skin.

Dry skin may have almost invisible pores, a rough and dull complexion, red patches, less elastic skin and more visible lines. Dry skin can crack, peel, or become itchy, irritated, or inflamed. Very dry skin may become rough and scaly, like on the backs of hands, arms, and legs. Dry skin may be affected by genetic makeup, aging, hormonal changes, weather like wind, sun, or cold, UV radiation from tanning beds, indoor heating, long hot baths and showers, ingredients in soaps and cleansers, and medications.

Oily skin may have enlarged pores, dull, shiny or thick complexion, blackheads, pimples, or other blemishes. It can be affected by puberty or hormonal imbalances, stress, or too much heat or humidity.

If you aren’t sure what your skin type is, or if you know your skin type but aren’t sure how to best care for it, let’s schedule a free consultation to chat more! We would love to recommend a skincare routine that fits your budget!

What is Rosacea? Lean More at Fort Collins Med Spa!

Do you struggle with rosacea? This common skin disease affects people over the age of 30, causing redness on nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. Some people get bumps and pimples on these red areas of the face. It can also cause burning and soreness in your eyes. For some, rosacea can prevent the feeling of confidence in work or social settings.

There is no definitive cause linked to rosacea. Something irritates the skin, but it doesn’t seem to be a bacterial infection. It generally affects adults with fair skin or those that blush easily, and it appears to run in families.

Medical tests are not usually needed to confirm the presence of rosacea, as it can be detected by the pattern of redness on a face. In the past, it was thought to be caused by alcohol abuse, but this is not true. However, for those that already have rosacea, consuming alcohol may cause the symptoms to worsen.

Rosacea can flare up when something causes facial blood vessels to expand, which causes redness. Triggers (that cause flare ups) include exercise, sun and wind exposure, hot weather, stress, spicy foods, alcohol, and hot baths. Sudden temperature changes from hot to cold or cold to hot can also cause flare ups.

Symptoms include a flushed, red face with sensitive dry skin that may burn or sting; small bumps and pimples or breakouts resembling acne; skin that gets coarse and thicker with a bumpy texture; and dry, red, irritated eyes. Rarely, untreated rosacea may cause permanent effects like thickening of facial skin or vision loss. It could also cause knobby bumps on the nose, or give the nose a swollen, waxy look. Fortunately, most cases of rosacea don’t progress this far.

With treatment, most rosacea suffers can control symptoms and keep the disease from worsening.

Treatments include pills, such as low dose antibiotics like doxycycline, medicine containing skin creams, laser treatment called intense pulsed light (we do this here at Advanced Aesthetics of Northern Colorado), moisturizers and sunscreen, and eye drops, depending on the symptoms.

Rosacea flare ups can be reduced by the following: controlling symptoms, finding triggers, protecting your face from the sun, being gentle with your skin (by using sensitive skin care products like Lira) and taking care of your eyes.

To learn more about treatment for rosacea, contact us to schedule a complimentary consultation. We pride ourselves on being able to recommend treatment and products for almost any budget!
