Chemical Peels-What you Need to Know

Chemical peels are one way to achieve young and radiant skin. Essentially a peel removes damaged and hyper-pigmented skin and stimulates collagen production to firm skin. Peels vary from superficial to deep depending on the level and quickness of results you are looking to achieve.

What do peels do?

Peels make your skin smoother, assist in fading brown spots and correcting uneven skin tone and reveal a new fresh layer of skin. Those that use chemical peels to improve the appearance of wrinkles should have them done every 6 to 8 weeks.

Depending on the type of peel you get you can have some varying side effects. With superficial peels you will notice some redness and skin sensitivity with less noticeable results. There might also be a short period of time where you will notice your old layer of skin beginning to flake off. With more intense peels (medium and deep peels) you will notice more intense side effects than the superficial peel. This is due to the fact that peels essentially dissolve the top layer of your skin.

What are the benefits?

Peels are very beneficial to improve your skins function as well as your skin care products function on your skin. By removing your dead skin cells you are stimulating cell development and making it so that there are no dead cells for your skin care products to penetrate through to get to the living ones. There are also certain peels that can help unclog your pores to prevent acne and fade the scars caused post-pimples.

Do you suffer from wrinkles, fine lines, mild scars, acne, age spots, freckles, or dark patches on your face? If so, you may be a candidate for a chemical peel to improve your skin’s appearance. No need to hide behind makeup! Let the true you shine!

Chemical peels apply a chemical solution to the skin which gets rid of dead skin cells on the surface, and after about 10 days it begins to flake off. The new skin is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, or hands to improve the look and feel of the skin.

We will work with you to determine the depth of the peel, depending on the condition of your skin and your goals for treatment. First, we will clean your skin thoroughly. Then, we will apply one or more chemical solutions to the area of treatment- either glycolic acid, thrichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or a plant enzyme. This will create a controlled area of new skin generation.

During the treatment, most people feel five to ten minutes of a burning sensation, followed by a stinging sensation. Putting cool compresses on the skin may help with the stinging. If a deeper peel is performed, pain medication may be needed during or after the procedure. We will never perform a deep peel without a thorough consultation and skin analysis.

Depending on the type of peel, a reaction much like sunburn occurs after the procedure. There is usually peeling with redness, followed by scaling, which typically ends within three to seven days. Peels may be repeated within several weeks to months, depending on the depth of the peel and the results desired. Often times to achieve the optimum result a series of peels is best, over the course of 3-4 months.

Fort Collins Spa; Natural Healthy Skin

The skin is the largest organ of your entire body. Many don’t know this but the skin is one of the body’s ways of naturally eliminating toxins. What comes in must come out somehow. Sweat is an example of natural elimination. Acne too is a natural elimination of bacteria, hormones, pollutants and oils.

Make up can enhance your skin’s natural beauty when used appropriately. Still, it can also hinder the health of your skin of used too liberally. It can also make your skin look a hundred times worse if you use the wrong products or color. It can increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth. It can cast an off-putting tone on your complexion. Unhealthy toxins from the makeup’s ingredients can seep into your pores causing further irritation.

Fundamentally, make up is not a “cover up” that you want to rely on. Healthy, nourished, clean and balanced skin will bring out your natural beauty and enhance your finest qualities.

When patients come to me I do a complete skin analysis and what I’m looking for is to treat your whole body. I see your skin as symptomatic of your overall health. Rosacea, acne and some kinds of discoloration point to hormonal problems and inflammation. Flaky dry skin can point to dehydration.

We discuss what kinds of lifestyle changes you can make, in addition to what kind of Fort Collins spa treatments will be most beneficial to restoring the balance and glow to your skin.

These are 100% customized to what is going on with you. There is no one fix that is universal to all skin types. We then work out a treatment plan which will bring your skin back to a natural healthy glow. This might be a laser treatment or a chemical peel mask or a specialized product for daily use.

Don’t hide behind makeup. Your skin will always tell the truth. Schedule an appointment or consultation and be proactive about restoring your skin and your whole self to health.
